Following the first edition of Awakening at Safehouse in London, Awakening II continues in Shanghai and online.
Awakening does not always arrive as a clear moment. Sometimes it happens slowly. Sometimes through the body, through memory, through other people, or through a change in the way we see the world around us.
For Awakening II, we are interested in works that explore this process in their own way. This might be about becoming aware, unlearning, remembering, changing, returning, or simply noticing something that was already there.
We are open to different ways of working. We are particularly interested in works that move between the personal and the collective, the inner and the external, the visible and the unseen. Artists working across any medium are welcome - moving image, sound, scent, installation, performance, photography, painting, sculpture, text, etc.

We welcome field recordings, voice notes, sound pieces, conversations, sketches, accidental recordings, fragments...
You don’t need polished work.
No need to explain everything.

Luoping 2027 is the next stage of Chimimora’s developing rural residency and artistic research programme in Hunan, China.
The project will take place around an old family house in Luoping with a personal connection to Chimimora. Rather than transforming the house into a conventional gallery or residency centre, the intention is to repair and reactivate it as a place for living, listening, making, gathering and exchange.
Artists and practitioners will be invited to spend time in Luoping and develop their practices through encounters with the place and the people living there. The programme may involve sound, moving image, writing, performance, food, walking, conversation, workshops and other forms that emerge through the residency.
There is no expectation that every residency must result in a finished artwork. The project is interested in what becomes possible when artistic practice begins with staying, rather than arriving with an outcome already in mind.

At this stage, we are interested in beginning conversations with people and organisations who may want to shape, support or contribute to the project.
UK cultural partners
Venues and organisations interested in developing the UK-facing part of the programme through public events, artistic exchange, research or longer-term collaboration.
Research partners
Practitioners and researchers working around listening, rurality, anthropology, social practice, participation, memory, migration or related fields.
Artists
Practitioners interested in long-term, situated and collaborative ways of working, particularly those open to developing their practice through everyday life and relationships with a place.
Producers
People with experience in international production, coordination and logistics who can help develop a careful and sustainable working structure.
China-based collaborators
Artists, researchers, organisers and cultural organisations interested in rural practice, artistic exchange and alternative forms of residency.
Local collaborators
People with knowledge of Luoping and the surrounding region, including its histories, communities, land, everyday practices and changing rural life.
Documentation, publishing and radio partners
People and platforms interested in how the project might be recorded, reflected upon, circulated or heard beyond the residency itself.
Funding partners
Organisations and individuals interested in supporting the repair of the house, artist participation, local activity, research and the long-term development of the programme.
This is not yet an open call for residencies. We are currently building relationships, listening to different perspectives and allowing the structure of the project to develop gradually.

Research & Practice Space Open Call
We are pleased to launch the first issue of Research & Practice Space, a publication platform initiated by Chimimora exploring contemporary artistic practice through research, critical writing, and dialogue. Neither institution nor counter-institution, Chimimora remains a temporary space for experimentation.
The inaugural issue Public Art & Urban Intervention presents a critical examination of Chimimora’s evolving practice of nomadism, co-creation, and temporary cultural infrastructures. Developed in collaboration with Goldsmiths alumni and independent practitioners, it reflects on how artistic communities occupy and reimagine public space.
We welcome future contributions, including: Essays and critical texts / Artistic research / Interviews and conversations / Experimental writing / Public programmes and urban interventions / Collaborative projects.
We invite artists, writers, researchers, and curators to collaborate on future issues.
